Creak by Mira Dovreni

Project type

Site specific theatre piece

Date

2019 Thames Festival

Location

Deptford Creak

A piece of site specific interactive theatre I wrote while I was artist in residence at Creekside, a nature reserve on the Deptford Creek (the only tidal creek on the Thames).

The story of the Toshers, 18th century scavengers who used to go into the sewers to hunt for treasure dropped down the drains.

The Queen Rat was a shape shifter who could change into a beautiful woman and bring you luck when you were in trouble down the sewers. The great grand daughter of a Lewisham tosher claims her relative met her and had an affair with her while she was in human form.

Creak involves the audience joining in the Toshers hunt for a tosheroon (precious metals welded together by the sewer water) learning their songs and helping to rescue teh tosheroon from teh clutches of teh Queen Rat. A kind of outdoor immersive autumn pantomine.
